Tips for Buying a Youth ATV
Buying the latest and the most expensive ATV alone won’t do—you’ll want to purchase the perfect youth ATV for the kids. Don’t worry if you are unsure where to start—we’ve got you covered. Here are a few tips to help you buy the right model before your next family outing!
Size Selection
There’s a lot to think about when buying an ATV for the kids, and the first is the size.
You’ll want to double-check that the model you’re looking at is a kids’ ATV, meaning it’s for younger riders. You'll want your child to hop on a few to see how they fit. This will help you ensure they can reach all controls easily and are comfortable on the seat. Kids naturally get excited by aesthetics and might stretch to pretend an ATV they like fits better than it does. In general, kids aged six and up can ride an ATV with a little instruction. Children under six should never ride ATVs.
Next, you’ll want to explore the right engine size. Essentially, get something with a little less power than your average ATV. Kids between six and eleven can manage any engine that’s under 70cc. Preteens and teens should be able to control any engine below 90cc if they have the right training and can handle a machine with less power than yours.
Safety
Kids under the age of 14 should be supervised during all ATV rides. You’ll want to ride beside them, when possible, to help demonstrate correct speed and to remind them how to use controls if they forget.
You’ll also want to invest in the same safety equipment for your child as yours, meaning you’ll want to buy them a well-fitting helmet, boots that go above their ankles, gloves with a firm grip, and a long-sleeve shirt and pants. You can also get them chest plates to help keep them safer.
Kids Will Be Kids
Reinforcement is important, and you’ll want to go over all safety rules with your child before hitting the trails.
Motivate your kid to obey speed restrictions and reward them for riding at their appropriate skill level. You’ll also want to help them understand the importance of wearing safety gear and teach them to stay around other riders and never venture alone.
