Mudding is a popular form of ATV riding in which you take the vehicle out on a very wet and muddy trail. While mudding can be very enjoyable, a standard ATV won’t do very well in these kinds of wet conditions. This guide from Grossenburg Powersports can tell you more about how to modify your ATV to get it ready for mudding.

Prepare the Airbox

The airbox is the empty chamber located near your quad’s engine intakes. This is where air is collected before it goes into the cylinders. If your airbox isn’t watertight before you go mudding, there’s a chance that mud will find its way into your engine. Be sure to check it before you leave for your trip.

You also don’t want any water or mud to find its way into your ATV’s inlet. Install a snorkel kit to help keep the inlet dry when you go mudding. A snorkel kit acts for your ATV much like how a snorkel acts for a swimmer. They help to raise the inlet above the waterline. A proper snorkel kit will include extended CVT inlets, extended air intakes, and outlet exhausts.

Move the Radiator

A standard ATV model has the radiator somewhere above the front rack. Keeping the radiator dry is important, so you may need to move your quad’s radiator before you go mudding. Taping or otherwise modifying the radiator may be necessary as well.

Get a Winch

Many mudders have had their ride interrupted when their ATV got stuck in the mud. A winch can make getting your ATV unstuck much, much easier. Be sure to unspool and check your winch’s line before each ride.

Grease Up Your ATV's Parts

Mud and water can wreak havoc on your ATV’s internal circuitry. Many mudders apply marine grade dielectric grease before each ride to provide some extra protection. You can also protect your ATV’s throttle, hand grips, and brake levers from mud by spraying them down before the trip with some WD-40.
